Concentration - Drinking Game Rules & How to Play
Concentration is a drinking game in the Card Games category for 2-4 players that takes about 20-30 min with a medium difficulty level.
Match pairs from memory or drink
Equipment Needed
- Standard deck of cards
- Drinks
Setup
Shuffle a standard deck of cards thoroughly, then lay all 52 cards face down in a neat rectangular grid on a flat surface, ensuring no overlaps. Arrange the cards in rows and columns so players can easily reach any spot without disrupting the layout. Keep everyone's drink within arm's reach to avoid unnecessary pauses during gameplay.
How to Play Concentration
- Lay all cards face down in grid
- Flip two cards per turn
- Match = opponent drinks
- No match = you drink, flip back
- Remove matched pairs
- Most pairs wins
- Winner assigns 5 drinks
- Memory gets harder as you drink
Tips & Strategies
Start by focusing on positions where pairs have already been revealed, locking those early makes it harder for opponents to capitalize on your memory lapses later. Keep track of cards near the edges or corners, as players often ignore these spots in favor of the middle grid. If you're losing track as you drink more, slow your turns and mentally repeat the card positions you've already seen. If someone flips one card of a pair you remember, act like you don't know until it's your turn, then sweep in and match them for the win.
Variations
Sudden Death Match-Up. Shot Pair Round. Wildcard Joker Grid
Frequently Asked Questions
- What happens if someone accidentally flips more than two cards?
- If someone flips more than two cards on their turn, they automatically take a drink and lose their turn. Return all flipped cards to their original positions face down.
- Can matched pairs be shuffled back into the grid?
- No, matched pairs are removed completely from the grid to avoid confusion and keep the game progressing toward the end.
- What if two players tie for the most pairs at the end?
- In the event of a tie, both players assign five drinks collectively, splitting the assignments between them however they agree.
- How do jokers work in the Wildcard Joker Grid variation?
- Flipping one joker lets you immediately assign two drinks to anyone, but flipping both ends the current round, forcing everyone to drink once before resetting the grid without the jokers.
